SLC quick and quiet ahead of reading week

By Ashar Memon, November 7 2018 —

The Students’ Union Students’ Legislative Council forged ahead despite the mid-semester crunch to convene for a quick meeting on Nov. 6, which was marked by several absences and no major discussions or resolutions.

The evening began with an announcement by SU vice-president student life Nabila Farid, who said that a Pet Therapy session will be held this Friday, Nov. 9 in That Empty Space.

During executive reports, vice-president academic Jessica Revington reported interviewing candidates for the position of senior director of the Taylor Institute of Teaching and Learning, as well as securing two new awards for the Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Farid reported attending a Food Strategy consultation meeting, while vice-president operations and finance Kevin Dang reported discussing changes to the Refugee Student Board.

President Sagar Grewal and vice-president external Anayat Sidhu were not present at the meeting and their reports were not circulated in advance.

During committee chair reports, Dang said that the Nominations Committee interviewed candidates for the student-at-large position on the University of Calgary Senate, which was vacated by Sidhu in September. Farid said the Clubs Committee pre-approved four funding requests totalling $929.

During faculty representative reports, business representative Ananya Ayachit said she expects a Mathison Hall consultation survey to be released to students as soon as next week. Science representative Michael Nguyen reported publishing a survey about study spaces in Science Theatres, which he said will support an impending Quality Money application.

The meeting concluded with General Faculties Council caucus by Revington and a resolution to excuse Sidhu for her absence at Oct. 30 SLC last week, which passed unanimously.

SLC will not convene on Nov. 13 due to the fall semester reading week. The next meeting of SLC will be on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the MacHall Executive Council Chambers. Access elected official reports, trimester reports, minutes and all other SLC documents here.
