At A Glance: Bedouin Soundclash

Just like the Paul Frank popped-collar douchebags trying to fit in at the Hop-in-Brew, Bedouin Sounclash stuck out like two hobos snogging in the daytime when they played the mainstage at the Calgary Folk Music Festival.

Both guitarist/vocalist Jay Malinowski and bassist Eon Sinclair seemed as though they knew they didn't fit in, and were just really, really hoping that no one noticed. Unfortunately, their Zellers-commercial inflated egos had them playing a long set relative to other performers. Most people in the audience just politely waited for it to end until they played When the night feels my song--the only part of their set that didn't induce yawning.

If the show had one saving grace, it was drummer Pat Pengelly. Unlike Malinowski and Sinclair, there was no overcompensation or frills in his performance, all while exhibiting a vastly superior talent. Though he certainly deserves better than his current bandmates, Pengelly sadly wasn't enough to save the show.

Unlike hobos greasily sliding all over each other on a sunny park bench, Bedouin Soundclash didn't even possess the car-accident horror factor that can sometimes turn heads and inadvertantly capture interest. Like a former jock-socialite popping up his collar as he hits on hipster girls, Bedouin Soundclash just sadly failed to be interesting enough.

mr. francis seems to know a ton about music and what makes a great show, so im just wondering if mr. francis has ever played an instrument or performed in front of a crowd. i mean, he has such a grasp on what it takes to be a great band, play great shows, and how to fit in, it sounds like he really knows his stuff, or at least how to open a thesauras. if he knows his stuff so well why isn't he on the road doing it and rocking people instead of writing about other people doing it? by the way i have never seen or heard of the band you are talking about but mr. francis writes and is most likely a huge douche.

paul frank popped collar douchbags? i work at paul frank in california and i cannot place which douchbags you are talking about. it is my opinion that there are some pretty damn cool, ego free and interesting kids working at pf. please elaborate...

Reader, you're right. It is indeed fact that Mr. Francis is a huge doucheóhe's well known for it. However it doesn't change Bedouin's poor performance at the folk fest. But again good catch on the whole "douche" thing.

i can't think of a more intelligent metaphor than greasy hobos, thanks for being a shining light of thought provoking journalism in a sea of mediocrity. You are no amateur, even though you work as one mr. francis.

Huh? Me and my friends loved it, and so did everyone around us, so, Kyle, I'm not sure what show you're talking about...

What I enjoyed most about Bedouin Soundclash's set was their repeated use of venom-spitting dingos. Though the bassist certainly made a fine effort when he transformed himself into a hydra, I was mainly impressed by the entire band's ability to come together and form a Voltron-style battle mech capable of both thrashing the dingos to death and also firing beams of pure self-satisfaction at the adoring crowd.

Admittadly, the set itself may have been a bit dry and repetetive, but I think that any shortcomings of the performance can be forgotten in light of the encore performance's showcase of twelve nubile Atlantean mermaids, thrashing about until Beduoin Soundclash drank their virginal blood and danced about on their scales.
