After months of reviewing potential dean candidates from North America and Europe, the Haskayne School of Business has appointed Michael Grandin, who will assume his new position beginning April 2004.
"Over my career I had the good fortune to work for 10 dynamic companies spanning six different industries," said Grandin. "This appointment provides a wonderful opportunity for me to put that experience to work."
The 12-member Haskayne's Advisory Selection Committee for the Dean selected Grandin from a large pool of candidates for his wide range of skills.
"Michael Grandin demonstrated strong leadership capability at a variety of organizations during his career, most recently as CEO of Fording Canadian Coal Trust," explained committee member Dr. Thomas Rohleder. "He also has experience in a variety of businesses including oil and gas, finance and management consulting."
Grandin's skillset will continue to build on the school's world-class reputation. Locally, he is also respected, having been chosen as one of Alberta's most influential people.
"Michael Grandin's knowledge and understanding of the Calgary business community, his reputation and his connections to the Calgary business community were also influencing factors [in his selection]," said Dr. Rohleder.
The members of the Advisory Selection Committee expect Grandin to improve on the practical education and employment opportunities for business students, develop new research opportunities for the faculty and find additional funding for the faculty. With a new Dean faculty members are also optimistic.
"I am personally delighted with the selection of Michael Grandin as our new dean, and I very much look forward to working with him upon his arrival April 1 to commence his five year appointment," said Interim Dean [Dr.] Carol Stewart, who is also the Associate Dean.
