This year’s executive team have set out attainable goals, but with only four months left in their positions, time is slowly slipping away for them to finish what they set out to do.

Sustainability is an important issue for most Calgarians. The University of Calgary’s Sustainability Street Team is going green for another year of projects and campaigns to promote sustainable practices.


Working under the guidance of U of C’s Office of Sustainability, the team of student volunteers will educate peers about sustainable living and participate in various eco-friendly events on campus. A large part of their events and promotions will focus on reducing the ecological footprint of the U of C.

At the end of this month, 110 Canadians from all walks of life will gather in Calgary for a nation-wide public consultation on climate change.

While Canadians discuss climate change Sept. 26, similar consultations will take place in approximately 40 other countries around the globe.

Decisions reached by the randomly selected citizens at each forum will influence global climate policy.

This Green Shift has become so complicated and complex that even Dion himself struggles to explain the plan.

The Energy Alberta Corporation proposed nuclear power early last year as a means of supplying energy to the oil and gas industry while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Peace River is a likely site for the first plant.

However, fueling the oilsands with nuclear energy is not a greener alternative, said one expert in the field.

While the introduction of a carbon tax is approved by environmental agencies and petroleum producers alike, it does not appear that the federal government will be enforcing these changes any time soon.
