In response to cutbacks to fine arts education in recent years, community group Save Our Fine Arts is hosting a rally to engage Calgarians in conversation about the future of Alberta’s art education programs.


Enrolment will be reduced at the University of Calgary as the faculties of arts, nursing and medicine will accept fewer students in the upcoming year. Provost and vice-president academic Dru Marshall announced the reductions at a budget meeting held in the MacEwan Hall Ballroom where plans to deal with the recent provincial post-secondary budget cuts were discussed. 


On Wednesday, April 3, University of Calgary provost and vice-president academic Dru Marshall unveiled the new logo for Dinos athletics to an eager student body and faculty. As part of the rebranding campaign, the Dinos have partnered with Nike as their official sponsor for their athletic apparel, in addition to other changes around athletics that include the upcoming overhaul of the Jack Simpson Gymnasium. This new corporate partnership brings potential for increased athlete recruitment and merchandise sales. 


A recent study at the University of Calgary has found that university students are losing their ability to read. One of the first signs of this decrease is an inability to understand satire. The lead researcher, Dr. Cindy Whitehorn, said that although this decrease is sad, it really comes as no surprise. 


The Student Empowerment Project, created at the University of Calgary by second-year political science student Dave Beninger, looks to fight the recent provincial budget cuts to post-secondary education.


The Alberta government announced a 6.8 per cent decrease to post-secondary operational funding on March 7. On March 29, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Enterprise sent out the first draft of the post-secondary expectation letter, stating a “non-negotiable” plan for universities to streamline their programming.


The University of Calgary unveiled its new International Strategy on March 25, 2013, with goals of increasing the U of C’s international prestige. The strategy is part of the 
U of C’s Eyes High strategic goal of becoming a top five Canadian research university by 2016.

For the first time since it was established in 1972, the Summer Temporary Employment Program has been indefinitely suspended. 


STEP offered thousands of students employment opportunities at many different organizations across Alberta.


In summer 2012, STEP had an operating budget of $7.1 million, providing over 3,000 students temporary summer jobs at many small businesses and non-profit organizations that wouldn’t have had the funds to hire students otherwise. 


The 2013–14 Alberta provincial budget has slashed $147 million from post-secondary education operational funding, a 6.8 per cent decrease from last year’s budget.


The provincial budget aims to reduce Alberta’s deficit, which, prior to the budget cuts, was projected at $4 billion. The new budget reduces the projected deficit to $2 billion, but has still generated criticism from opposing political parties who feel the ruling Progressive Conservatives have handled the budget irresponsibly and failed on campaign promises.
