  Repairing the cracks of domestic violencePDF files may take a moment to load

The Centre for Response-Based Practice out of Duncan B.C. and the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, along with the City University of Seattle masters and counseling program are presenting a three-day conference at the University of Calgary on May 29–31. The conference, called In Dignity, will address domestic violence and will talk about how people respond to and resist violence. This conference is the first one to present ideas about response-based practice in Calgary.

Enrolment will be reduced at the University of Calgary as the faculties of arts, nursing and medicine will accept fewer students in the upcoming year. Provost and vice-president academic Dru Marshall announced the reductions at a budget meeting held in the MacEwan Hall Ballroom where plans to deal with the recent provincial post-secondary budget cuts were discussed.

A recent study at the University of Calgary has found that university students are losing their ability to read. One of the first signs of this decrease is an inability to understand satire. The lead researcher, Dr. Cindy Whitehorn, said that although this decrease is sad, it really comes as no surprise.

The Student Empowerment Project, created at the University of Calgary by second-year political science student Dave Beninger, looks to fight the recent provincial budget cuts to post-secondary education.


The Alberta government announced a 6.8 per cent decrease to post-secondary operational funding on March 7. On March 29, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Enterprise sent out the first draft of the post-secondary expectation letter, stating a “non-negotiable” plan for universities to streamline their programming.

The dinosaurs may be extinct, but the University of Calgary has ensured that the Dinos keep on evolving by officially unveiling their new logo to students on Wednesday, April 3 at the MacEwan Student Centre South Courtyard.


The Dinos have changed their logo several times throughout their over 40 year history as a university. The U of C introduced their first dinosaur logo in 1964 and has updated it four times since then. When the Jack Simpson Gym floor was installed, the logo was the rotund dinosaur from the 1980s.

The 2013–14 Alberta provincial budget has slashed $147 million from post-secondary education operational funding, a 6.8 per cent decrease from last year’s budget.


The provincial budget aims to reduce Alberta’s deficit, which, prior to the budget cuts, was projected at $4 billion. The new budget reduces the projected deficit to $2 billion, but has still generated criticism from opposing political parties who feel the ruling Progressive Conservatives have handled the budget irresponsibly and failed on campaign promises.

Tom Flanagan, a political science professor at the University of Calgary and conservative activist, has been castigated this week following remarks made at the University of Lethbridge about child pornography. Flanagan’s word choice was poor, but commentators have blown this incident out of proportion without paying attention to context. Unfortunately, Flanagan has been so badly reprimanded over the verbal slip that the message he was attempting to communicate and its real problems have been ignored.

The cost of post-secondary education in Canada is constantly rising. Along with tuition and other fees, students must buy textbooks, which can cost hundreds of dollars each semester.


Textbook publishing is a big business. What students may not realize is how professors interact with large publishing firms to determine which textbooks to use. Every year, sales representatives of textbook publishers approach many professors at the University of Calgary to help determine the textbooks used in classes.
